Cummins introduced a European version of its 15-liter X15N natural gas engine, while Tesla released European specifications for the Semi and plans to begin customer deliveries in 2027. Both products are being shown publicly in Hanover this week, but their arrival carries implications well beyond the event itself.

For fleets, the launches add two more options to a European heavy-duty market already weighing battery-electric trucks, hydrogen, natural gas and increasingly efficient combustion technologies against infrastructure availability, payload requirements and operating costs.

The European X15N is not simply the North American engine with a new emissions certification. Cummins rates the Euro 7 version from 571 to 651 hp and 1,918 to 2,213 lb-ft of torque. By comparison, the North American X15N is offered from 400 to 500 hp and 1,450 to 1,850 lb-ft. Cummins clocked 40,000 hours of bench testing and more than 3 million miles of road testing while developing the European version.

The move follows the X15N’s rollout in North America, where Cummins offers the engine for natural gas and renewable natural gas operation in heavy-duty and long-haul applications. North American fleets have been evaluating the engine as a way to bring 15-liter performance to a fuel that previously faced limitations in some heavier and longer-haul duty cycles.

Tesla is taking a different route into the same long-haul market.

The European Semi is initially being offered in a Standard Range configuration with an estimated 550 kilometers (342 miles) of range at a gross combination weight of 40 metric tons. Tesla estimates energy consumption at 1.0 kilowatt-hour per kilometer, or approximately 1.6 kWh per mile.

The truck uses three independent motors on the rear axles and provides up to 800 kilowatts of drive power. Tesla lists curb weight at less than 9,100 kilograms, or about 20,000 pounds, and an electric power take-off rated at up to 25 kilowatts.

Charging will also differ somewhat from the current North American specification. The European Semi has up to 800 kilowatts of charging capability, and the Semi Charger can recover as much as 60% of the truck’s range in 30 minutes and will use the MCS 3.2 charging interface. European customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027.

The U.S. version is now moving into broader commercial deployment. Tesla began producing Semis from its high-volume Nevada production line this spring, and fleets including Paper Transport are evaluating the truck in commercial operations. Einride also announced an order for 500 Tesla Semis for deployment across five U.S. states.
