During Tesla’s Q1 2025 earnings call, the company provided updates on the Tesla Semi, highlighting its performance, deployment, and future prospects.
Tesla confirmed that the Semi has been actively utilized in real-world operations, particularly by early adopters like PepsiCo. The vehicle has demonstrated impressive efficiency and reliability, according to the manufacturer, aligning with Tesla’s expectations for its electric Class 8 truck.
The company also addressed the development of charging solutions tailored for the Semi. Tesla is progressing with the deployment of Megachargers, designed to provide the high-power charging necessary for long-haul electric trucking. These chargers are being strategically installed to support fleet operations and ensure minimal downtime.
Tesla discussed its plans to scale up production of the Semi to meet growing demand. The company is focused on optimizing manufacturing processes to increase output while maintaining quality standards. Deliveries are expected to expand beyond initial partners as production ramps up.
During the Q&A sesssion, Lars Moravy, Tesla’s VP of vehicle engineering, confirmed that construction has commenced on the dedicated Semi factory in Reno, Nevada. He stated that the first vehicles from this facility are planned for late 2025, with external customer deliveries starting in 2026. Moravy explained that Tesla is finalizing the engineering of the Semi to enable cost-effective, high-volume production, incorporating learnings from their pilot fleet, including PepsiCo’s operations. This update aligns with Tesla’s broader strategy to expand its manufacturing capabilities for the Semi, aiming to address the growing demand for electric freight solutions.
The company also expressed confidence in the Semi’s role in transforming freight transportation, emphasizing its commitment to continuous improvement, including enhancements in vehicle range, efficiency, and integration with Tesla’s broader ecosystem.
