Gatik and Loblaw Companies Limited have signed a five-year agreement to expand the deployment of autonomous trucks across Loblaw’s Greater Toronto Area distribution network. The deal marks one of the largest planned rollouts of autonomous trucks in North America.

The initial phase includes 20 trucks by the end of 2025 and 30 more by the end of 2026. The trucks will first operate with safety drivers before transitioning to driverless “Freight-Only” operations. Together, the companies aim to serve over 300 Loblaw stores with greater delivery frequency and responsiveness.

Loblaw has also made a strategic investment in Gatik to support scaling the company’s AI-powered logistics solution. The partnership builds on their 2022 milestone, when Gatik and Loblaw launched Canada’s first driverless commercial fleet.

Ontario’s newly introduced Automated Commercial Motor Vehicle Pilot Program, effective August 2025, provides the regulatory framework enabling autonomous medium-duty trucks on public roads. This development positions both companies to scale operations safely across the province.

The expanded fleet will include cold-chain-capable vehicles, designed for transporting groceries and household items on short-haul routes. Gatik’s “AI Driver” technology has already logged extensive commercial miles in markets such as Texas, Arkansas, Arizona, and Ontario.
