In a milestone for the autonomous vehicle industry, Tesla has completed its first fully autonomous delivery of a consumer vehicle. A new Model Y was transported from the company’s Gigafactory in Austin to a customer’s residence with no human driver or remote operator involved.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that the delivery was entirely driverless on X, describing it as a “fully autonomous” journey using the company’s latest Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. The vehicle operated without anyone in the cabin and without remote guidance. The delivery route stretched approximately 15 miles through mixed urban and highway environments, and included highway merges, traffic light navigation, and residential parking.
The Model Y ran Tesla’s AI-based, camera-only FSD system, which the company has been refining through its Robotaxi initiative. This delivery marks the first time the technology has been used to autonomously hand off a vehicle directly to a consumer.
Tesla’s Robotaxi pilot program, which launched in Austin earlier this month, includes vehicles equipped with the same software. While the Austin pilot currently includes human safety monitors in the cabin, this recent delivery signals a significant step toward removing the driver entirely from the equation.
With this first delivery complete, Tesla appears intent on accelerating its autonomous roadmap, with potential implications for the broader transportation and logistics sectors.
