Stellantis will cease its investments in Symbio, the hydrogen fuel-cell joint venture it formed with Michelin and Forvia. The decision, reported by Bloomberg, marks a significant pivot away from hydrogen technologies as Stellantis sharpens its focus on battery-electric vehicles.

Symbio was originally launched to scale hydrogen fuel-cell production and support commercial vehicle applications in Europe and North America. Stellantis became an equal partner in 2023, joining Michelin and Forvia with a 33.3% stake in the venture. At the time, the automaker cited hydrogen as a complementary zero-emission solution to battery-electric platforms.

According to Bloomberg, Stellantis now plans to halt funding to Symbio by 2026 and is pulling back from commercial deployment of hydrogen-powered vehicles. The move leaves Symbio in the hands of Michelin and Forvia, who must now determine the future of the venture without one of its key strategic and financial backers.

Michelin reportedly called Stellantis’s exit “unexpected” and warned of potential job losses, while Forvia noted the decision could have material implications for Symbio’s operations.
