Since February, the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) and ACT News have been hosting a comprehensive webinar series designed to guide fleets through the complexity of transitioning to cleaner technologies. The Run on Less – Messy Middle Bootcamp series has brought together experts from across the trucking, energy, and manufacturing sectors to explore viable decarbonization strategies already in play across the country.
The final session, the Bootcamp Finale Workshop, will take place July 15 and promises to tie together insights from the past six months while preparing fleets for the Run on Less – Messy Middle demonstration coming in September.
Each session has tackled specific themes across three broad fuel categories — diesel and natural gas, battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), and hydrogen — with a focus on real-world applicability and lessons learned from fleets already embracing these technologies.
The Bootcamp kicked off with a close look at low-carbon diesel and natural gas solutions. These early sessions covered the role of renewable diesel and biodiesel in reducing emissions today, along with the opportunities and limitations of renewable natural gas. Experts weighed in on infrastructure availability, price trends, and the evolving emissions regulatory landscape.
The series then turned its focus to battery-electric trucks, diving into the state of the technology, infrastructure challenges, depot charging models, and real-world deployment strategies. Industry leaders from utilities, OEMs, and logistics companies shared lessons from the field, highlighting what’s working and what’s still evolving.
Next the NACFE team shifted to hydrogen’s potential in the heavy-duty space. Sessions examined how hydrogen is produced, transported, and delivered to fleets, as well as the market and policy conditions needed to make hydrogen a scalable alternative. From onboard storage to fueling station logistics, presenters provided a realistic look at both the promise and complexity of this emerging fuel.
On Tuesday, July 15 at 10 am PT/1 pm ET, NACFE will host the final Bootcamp webinar. This culminating session will highlight the top 10 insights from across the series, offer early impressions from site visits to the fleets participating in the upcoming Run on Less demonstration, and preview what’s to come in September.
